Hierbij worden alle leden van de V.V.E. uitgenodigd op de bijeenkomst in het Vrieselhof (Ranst-Oelegem) van 14.00 tot 17.00 uur, met mogelijkheid om de herwerkte collecties te bezoeken en de nieuwste entomologische literatuur te raadplegen.
Meld je wel op voorhand aan zodat we een overzicht krijgen van het aantal aanwezigen. Stuur daarvoor een mailtje naar de secretaris of contacteer het meldpunt op 0468.46.85.30.

News from the Biodiversity Heritage Library
On 1 January 2026, the Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL) will take flight, becoming fully independent after nearly two decades hosted by the Smithsonian Institution. This transition marks an historic milestone – and an urgent challenge. BHL’s future depends on securing the systems, staff, and partnerships that keep 500 years of biodiversity knowledge freely accessible to the world. When the Smithsonian announced in early 2025 that it would cease hosting and administering BHL, our global community rallied. Through our Call for Support, we received commitments from institutions and outpourings of love – a testament to the strength of the BHL community and the value placed on open biodiversity knowledge. Those pledges give us the stability to complete our transition and start building a foundation for the future. Yet they will only sustain us through 2026, perhaps into 2027.

Als je echt moderne methoden wilt leren voor het verzamelen, conserveren en bestuderen van insecten en andere terrestrische arthropoden, lees dan dit rijk geïllustreerde boek dat een op 1 december 2025 is gepubliceerd door de organisatoren van de gezamenlijke conferentie van de Australische en Nieuw-Zeelandse Entomologische Verenigingen (VVE heeft bijgedragen met het symposium over interacties tussen insecten en planten, zie hieronder). De moderne conserveringsmethoden zouden geschikt moeten zijn voor je toekomstige publicaties over Biodiscovery, DNA-benaderingen en programma's voor Machine Learning en Image Recognition.
Dit boek is beschikbaar in de bibliotheek van de Vlaamse Vereniging voor Entomologie. Je bent van harte welkom om deze bibliotheek te bezoeken op zaterdag van 14.00 tot 17.00 uur in het VVE-hoofdkantoor in Vrieselhof.

Photo Award 2025
The Photo Committee of Phegea editors is very pleased to announce that the Phegea 2025 Photo award is presented to Figure 6 (Phegea 53-2 page 65), illustrating Saturnia pyri. This species is the largest moth in Europe and has an impressively picturesque wing pattern. We congratulate our editor, Radoslav Valkov, for winning this award.

Priorities and change drivers for the Flemish Entomological Society in 2026
On 20 November 2025, the Membership secretary of the FES followed the webinar on future Research Offices, moderated by leading research managers in the EU and UK. FES, with 204 very active members with great ambitions and a drive for research, is the organisation that we need to think about the work of our Research Office (General Secretariat).
What are the top priorities for research officers? 1) diversifying funding sources; 2) enhancing the visibility and reputation of our Society; 3) obtaining more funding.
What are the top challenges for us in the future? 1) rising costs; 2) teaming with Artificial Intelligence; 3) domestic politics.

Entomology Day – vrijdag 19 December 2025
On Friday 19th December the Netherlands Entomological Society (NEV) will organize the 37th Entomology Day! At this annual meeting at the Reehorst in Ede a wide range of entomologists will gather to share their latest findings and their enthusiasm for insects. This year’s key-note presentation entitled "Plants in control: the botanical basis of biocontrol efficacy” will be given by Dr. Felix Wäckers, director R&D at Biobest sustainable crop management. We invite presentations on all topics related to entomology. This year we especially welcome presentations linked to the keynote on the theme of plant-insect interactions in biological control.

FES supports international collaboration in Insect Conservation

Through international collaboration with other entomological societies and organisations, the FES aims to address insect decline, invasive species, and ecosystem challenges that cross national boundaries. Our goal is to translating entomological research into real-world conservation outcomes.
The WG Butterflies will address these issues next year with our colleagues from France (Militair kamp van Mourmelon) in May 2026 and in Wales
(UK) to monitor the populations of Coenonympha tullia (Müller, 1764) in June 2026. Here we present another EU-funded ‘LIFE ORCHIDS’ initiative and monitoring the endangered Large Blue butterfly (Phengaris arion (Linnaeus, 1758)). The FES commits to working with scientists, conservationists, and policymakers to safeguard insect biodiversity, combining scientific research and collaborative partnerships across borders.
Door middel van internationale samenwerking met andere entomologische verenigingen en organisaties wil de VVE de achteruitgang van insectenpopulaties, invasieve soorten en ecosysteemuitdagingen die de landsgrenzen overschrijden, aanpakken. Ons doel is om entomologisch onderzoek te vertalen naar concrete resultaten op het gebied van natuurbehoud.
De WG Butterflies zal deze kwesties volgend jaar aanpakken met onze collega's uit Frankrijk (Militair kamp van Mourmelon) in mei 2026 en in Wales (VK) om de populaties van Coenonympha tullia (Müller, 1764) in juni 2026 te monitoren. Hier presenteren we een ander door de EU gefinancierd initiatief, ‘LIFE ORCHIDS’, dat zich richt op het monitoren van het bedreigde tijmblauwtje (Phengaris arion (Linnaeus, 1758)). De VVE zet zich in om samen te werken met wetenschappers, natuurbeschermers en beleidsmakers om de biodiversiteit van insecten te beschermen, door wetenschappelijk onderzoek en grensoverschrijdende samenwerkingsverbanden te combineren.

Could flower exports contribute to vectors of livestock and equid arboviruses?

A recent article authored published in Medical and Veterinary Entomology, “Investigation of the global transportation of Culicoides biting midges, vectors of livestock and equid arboviruses, from flower-packing plants in Kenya”, investigates whether Culicoides biting midges, tiny insects that can carry serious livestock viruses, are being accidentally exported from Africa to Europe in shipments of cut flowers.
Recent outbreaks of livestock diseases in Europe have unclear origins, and there has been intense debate about how these viruses arrived, especially in places far from expected transmission routes.
Een recent artikel gepubliceerd in Medical and Veterinary Entomology, getiteld “Investigation of the global transportation of Culicoides biting midges, vectors of livestock and equid arboviruses, from flower-packing plants in Kenya”, onderzoekt of Culicoides-muggen, kleine insecten die ernstige vee-virussen kunnen overbrengen, per ongeluk vanuit Afrika naar Europa worden geëxporteerd in zendingen snijbloemen.
Recente uitbraken van veeziekten in Europa hebben een onduidelijke oorsprong en er is een intense discussie gaande over hoe deze virussen zijn aangekomen, vooral op plaatsen die ver verwijderd zijn van de verwachte transmissieroutes.

Datum & plaats zijn ondertussen vastgelegd en werden bekend gemaakt aan de deelnemers die zich hebben ingeschreven. Deze sessies starten in november 2025.
De samples voor het opzetten worden aangeleverd door de VVE WG Dagvlinders maar er is ook de mogelijkheid om eigen samples op te zetten. Idem voor samples genitaliënonderzoek.
Prepareermateriaal kan eventueel voorzien worden maar wij raden toch aan om eigen materiaal aan te schaffen.

Save the Date! 11th Dresden Meeting on Insect Phylogeny
Dresden, September 23–25, 2026
The 11th Dresden Meeting on Insect Phylogeny is going to take place again at the Senckenberg Natural History Collections Dresden (Germany) on September 23–25, 2026 (Wednesday to Friday). As at previous meetings, ca. 25 invited speakers will talk about their phylogenetic research on insects covering a broad taxonomic range. In addition, attendees of the meeting are welcome to submit abstracts for contributed oral presentations (ca. 10 slots available) or posters on any subject related to the phylogeny and evolution of insects. Students and early career researchers are explicitly encouraged to submit their topics. A website for the meeting will be set up in spring 2026 and announced in another circular. The website will provide details on attendee registration and submission of abstracts; a preliminary program will be added later. As for former meetings, fees are kept low (general 100 Euros; reduced 50 Euros; 15 Euros added for late registration after June 30, 2026). More information will follow.

Onderzoekers van het International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis en de Universiteit van Amsterdam voeren een onderzoek uit om de perceptie van het publiek over citizen science te onderzoeken.
Tijdens de enquête krijg je een reeks korte beschrijvingen te zien van hypothetische citizen science-projecten. Vervolgens word je gevraagd om degene te selecteren die je het meest betrouwbaar vindt en om je vertrouwen in die keuze te beoordelen. Het invullen van deze enquête duurt ongeveer 15 minuten en staat open voor alle volwassenen, ongeacht eerdere ervaring met citizen science.

De European Citizen Science Association (ECSA) Working Group on Policy, Strategies and Partnerships & the European Citizen Science (ECS) project heeft een position paper (standpuntnota) gepubliceerd over de toekomst van burgerwetenschap in Europa (met name in het kader van het volgende Europese kaderprogramma FP10).
Wat is het Europees kaderprogramma?
De Europese kaderprogramma's zijn financieringsprogramma's die door de Europese Commissie zijn opgezet om onderzoek in Europa te ondersteunen en te bevorderen. Het huidige (9e) programma heet “Horizon Europa”, loopt van 2021 tot 2027 en heeft een begroting van 95,5 miljard EUR. FP10 of “Kaderprogramma 10” zal het 10e Europese financieringsprogramma voor wetenschap en innovatie zijn en wordt momenteel voorbereid.

Insect Science is Global – the statement, signed by
the Flemish Entomological Society
Thank you for standing with us on advocating for the importance of an international approach to entomological science. I wanted to let you know that yesterday we updated the statement Insect Science is Global which you signed on to (co-published by the RES with a link here). Some of you were original signatories when this was first posted in late July, and some of you joined on after that point. This will be the only time that we intend to update this letter. With these updates, the letter now includes 33 organizations representing 25,000 insect scientists. Thank you for this effort. As additional opportunities present themselves for international scientific cooperation, we may be back in touch.

Flemish Biodiversity Data portal release
The Flemish Biodiversity Portal (Vlaams Biodiversiteitsportaal) is the new gateway for biodiversity data in Flanders. Built on the Atlas of Living Australia (ALA) technology and powered by GBIF data, it integrates information from research, monitoring programmes, citizen science, species lists, and GIS layers. Designed to serve both policy-makers and scientists, it delivers reliable evidence to support biodiversity and environmental decision-making, while providing open-access, standardised datasets for analysis and international collaboration.
By linking Flemish data with global infrastructures, it also demonstrates how open data can strengthen the knowledge base needed to understand, manage, and protect biodiversity worldwide. Explore the portal (in Dutch) and share your feedback with the team: support.natuurdata@inbo.be

Bezoek aan Naturalis / Visit to Naturalis – 15 November 2025
Snellen and Ter Haar Sections will work together
De VVE-vertegenwoordigers Jurate en Willy brachten op 15 november een bezoek aan Naturalis, waar ze de gezamenlijke sectievergadering van Snellen Ter Haar bijwoonden en de gerenoveerde, opnieuw opgestelde en gedigitaliseerde collectie Lepidoptera in de Collectietoren van Naturalis bezochten. We luisterden naar de lezing van Luc Willemse, voormalig collectiebeheerder van Orthopteroidea (sprinkhaan-achtigen) en bestuurslid van de Nederlandse Entomologische Vereniging, over het huidige beleid en collectieprofiel van Naturalis, naar de lezing van Rob de Vos, curator van de Lepidoptera-collectie en auteur van het Phegea-redactioneel artikel (zie Phegea 53-3), over de zeer rijke geschiedenis van de Naturalis-collecties, en naar de lezing over het genetische project van Lisa Schuart (Wageningen Universiteit) dat in samenwerking met onder andere Naturalis loopt rond Noctua pronuba en andere variabele nachtvlinders.
In de namiddag gaf Erik van Nieukerken ons een voorbeschouwing over zijn komende publicaties over Phyllocnistis- en Stigmella-soorten, en luisterden we naar talrijke interessante faunistische verslagen.
Volgend jaar zullen twee secties, Snellen (Microlepidoptera) en Ter Haar (Macrolepidoptera), samengaan tot één sectie. Wellicht biedt dat ook voor ons, VVE leden, een kans voor mogelijke collegiale samenwerking.
On 15 November, FES representatives Jurate and Willy visited Naturalis, where they attended the joint section meeting of Snellen Ter Haar and visited the renovated, reorganised and digitised Lepidoptera collection in the Naturalis Collection Tower. We listened to a lecture by Luc Willemse, former collection manager of Orthopteroidea (grasshopper-like insects) and board member of the Dutch Entomological Society, on the current policy and collection profile of Naturalis, to a lecture by Rob de Vos, curator of the Lepidoptera collection and author of the Phegea editorial article (see Phegea 53-3), on the very rich history of the Naturalis collections, and to the lecture on the genetic project of Lisa Schuart (Wageningen University) that is being conducted in collaboration with Naturalis, among others, on Noctua pronuba and other variable moths.
In the afternoon, Erik van Nieukerken gave us a preview of his upcoming publications on Phyllocnistis and Stigmella species, and we listened to numerous interesting faunistic reports.
Next year, two sections, Snellen (Microlepidoptera) and Ter Haar (Macrolepidoptera), will merge into one section. This may also offer us, FES members, an opportunity for possible collegial collaboration.
Bijeenkomst VVE WG Dagvlinders – uitslag voor 25 oktober 2025
Ondanks een 15-tal annulaties en enkele personen die niet opdaagden, was deze bijeenkomst opnieuw een geslaagde editie. De onderwerpen die werden besproken waren zeker interessant alsook de opdrachten die de aanwezigen dienden uit te voeren. We willen jullie nogmaals hartelijk bedanken voor jullie deelname aan het bijeenkomst van de WG Dagvlinders. We vonden het bijeenkomst zeer interessant en informatief, vooral de boeiende discussies en suggesties voor verbeteringen en richtlijnen voor de toekomst.

Artificiële intelligentie is intussen niet meer weg te denken. In zijn nieuwe lezing nam Mauritz Kelchtermans uit Leefdaal ons mee in de wereld van generatieve AI op woensdag 8 oktober in de bib van Leefdaal.
Na een korte inleiding over AI in het algemeen ging Kelchtermans dieper in op generatieve AI: Wat is het en wat kunnen we er nu al allemaal mee doen? Aanvankelijk was generatieve AI immers vooral met tekst, maar tegenwoordig is het “multimodaal”, met zowel tekst als beeld, video, geluid enz. Van de meer performante modellen wordt zelfs gezegd dat ze kunnen redeneren. Kelchtermans heeft het vervolgens over hoe generatieve AI zich verder zal ontwikkelen in de nabije toekomst (het einde van het begin!). Afsluiten deden we met een blik op de mogelijke negatieve effecten van AI en welke problemen het met zich meebrengt (het begin van het einde?).
Mauritz Kelchtermans uit Leefdaal is van opleiding scheikundige en studeerde na zijn loopbaan in chemisch onderzoek filosofie aan de KU Leuven. Hij begon daarna aan een doctoraat over de impact van artificiële intelligentie. Momenteel focust hij met zijn onderzoek op "deathbots/griefbots", m.a.w. chatbots/avatars die een overledene digitaal laten verrijzen.
Wat we hebben geleerd, is dat AI ons steeds vaker confronteert met morele en ethische vragen. Toch moeten we met onze tijd meegaan en leren om op een verantwoorde manier met AI om te gaan.

Nieuws van de Jeugdafdeling – Uitslag voor 27 september en 11 oktober 2025
Op 27 september was de VVE Jeugdafdeling te gast op de Bogaardendag te Deinze. Het weer zat voor de zoveelste keer dit jaar dik mee. Ze konden hun stand opzetten te midden van de boomgaard waar ze nog de geur van de vers geplukte vruchten konden ruiken. Meer info. Veel dank aan onze verantwoordelijke Chris, aan ons jeugdlid Leon, aan Delphine en Micheline voor hun aanwezigheid en inzet.
Op 11 oktober in het NEC De pastorie in Zonnegem, organiseerde de Jeugdafdeling van de VVE, in samenwerking met de gemeente Sint-Lievens-Houtem, een Kriebeldag met 45 deelnemers. De Jeugdafdeling nodigt VVE-leden uit om een handje te helpen bij haar activiteiten.

Blooming Buzzness – tot juni 2027
Wij hebben als Regionaal Landschap, samen met Viaverda, Provincie Oost-Vlaanderen en 4 partnergemeenten (Maldegem, Eeklo, Deinze en Zulte) een project rond habitatverbetering voor wilde bestuivers opgestart genaamd Blooming Buzzness. Ons doel is om in de 4 partnergemeenten een bijenwerkgroep op te zetten en een bijenactieplan op te maken en gedurende de loop van het project (tot juni 2027) ook enkele acties van het bijenactieplan uit te voeren.
Nodig nieuwe leden uit / Invite new members
Spreek je vrienden en collega's over vlinders, kevers, zweefvliegen en zoveel meer. Maak hen enthousiast om lid te worden van de Vlaamse Vereniging voor Entomologie via de inschrijvingspagina.

We presenteren 9 nieuwe genera, 38 nieuwe soorten voor de wetenschap op een holistische manier, inclusief 173 volledige mitochondriale genomen uit collectiespecimens van soms meer dan 100 jaar oud. Deze studie is een game changer voor collectie-gebaseerd onderzoek.

It is with enormous pleasure and pride we announce that the monograph we co-authored with our Australian colleagues has been published.
We present 9 new genera, 38 new species for science in a holistic way, including 173 whole mitochondrial genomes from collection specimens sometimes more than 100 years old. This study is a game changer for collection-based research.
