Phegea 40 – 2012

Phegea 40 – nummer 1a (1 maart 2012) (Mededelingen)

van Oorschot H. & Coutsis J. G.: An unusual Polyommatus thersites with basal black spots on FW underside (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae, Polyommatiti).
Phegea 40(1a): 3–4.
A male Polyommatus thersites with basal black spots on its FW underside is reported for the first time, and the merits of differentiating this species from the similar P. icarus solely on the basis of the existence or not of these spots are questioned.

Dils J.: A new species of Thyridanthrax from Morocco (Diptera: Bombyliidae).
Phegea 40(1a): 5–6.
A new Bombyliid species is described from Morocco: Thyridanthrax maroccanus n. sp., based on 17 males and 12 females collected in the Ouarzazate region (S. E. Morocco) in March–April in 2007 and 2009. The new species seems to be related to Thyridanthrax loustaui Andreu, 1961, Murcia (S. Spain).

Troukens W.: Bladhaantjes aan de westrand van Brussel (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), deel 1: Criocerinae, Cryptocephalinae en Chrysomelinae.
Phegea 40(1a): 7–14.
Sinds 1970 werden 64 soorten Chrysomelidae waargenomen aan de westrand van Brussel. De ontdekking van deze soorten wordt kort besproken, alsook hun voedselplanten en enkele bijzonderheden.

Anastassiu H. T.: First record of Clossiana selene in Greece (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae).
Phegea 40(1a): 15–16.
A restricted colony of Clossiana selene ([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775) is reported for the first time from Greece. The species appeared to be locally common in mid-July 2011, however its known distribution so far is extremely limited, encompassing only a small marshland area surrounded by coniferous forest in the West Rhodópi mountain range, NE Greece, very close to the Bulgarian border. The small size of its habitat, which is of unusual nature in Greece, in conjunction with the general rarity of this butterfly in SE Europe, call for immediate environmental protection by the authorities.

Franeta F., Kogovšek N. & Verovnik R.: On the presence of Pontia chloridice (Lepidoptera: Pieridae) in the Republic of Macedonia.
Phegea 40(1a): 17–20.
The Small Bath White, Pontia chloridice (Hübner, 1813), is a rare species in the Balkan Peninsula and has been known only by two reliable historical records from the Republic of Macedonia. Its presence was therefore considered a result of rare long distance migrations to the country. In the last three years the species was observed on several occasions in the wide alluviums of the tributaries of the Vardar River in the south-eastern part of the country. The larval host plant Cleome ornithopodioides and larvae of P. chloridice were also discovered indicating that the species is a resident in this region. Although the suitable habitats are limited, there is currently no immediate threat to the species.

Phegea 40 – nummer 1b (1 maart 2012)

Baugnée J.-Y. & van As B.: Stigmella magdalenae (Lepidoptera: Nepticulidae), new to the Belgian fauna.
Phegea 40(1b): 22–24.
Stigmella magdalenae (Klimesch, 1950) is mentioned here for the first time from Belgium. On 23 August 2009, several leaf mines were found on Sorbus aucuparia L. at Arlon (province of Luxembourg), in the military camp Lagland, leg. J.-Y. Baugnée. On 28 August 2010, five mines were found on Sorbus aucuparia in a second Walloon locality, at Bévercé (province of Liège), in the valley Trôs Marets, leg. B. van As. Information on the biology and the distribution of this species are presented.

Coutsis J. G.: Paysandisia archon, new to Páros Island, Greece (Lepidoptera: Castniidae).
Phegea 40(1b): 25–26.
The S American Castniid moth Paysandisia archon (Burmeister, 1800), which was accidentally introduced to several S European localities, is now also being recorded for the first time from the Greek island of Páros. This record is the first ever published for Greece as a whole by a lepidopterological journal, all past Greek records having been either in the form of announcements in the local press, or having been included in a doctorate thesis.

Ghahari H. & Jussila R.: A contribution to the knowledge of the Ichneumon wasps (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) from Guilan Province, Northern Iran.
Phegea 40(1b): 29–32.
In a total of 28 ichneumonid species from 22 genera and 6 subfamilies (Cremastinae, Cryptinae, Ichneumoninae, Pimplinae, Rhyssinae and Tryphoninae) were collected from Guilan province, northern Iran. Of these, one species Schizopyga podagrica Gravenhorst is new record for Iran.

Wullaert S.: Nemapogon wolffiella (Lepidoptera: Tineidae), new species for the Belgian fauna.
Phegea 40(1b): 33–34.
On 29 May 2010 a specimen of Nemapogon wolffiella Karsholt & Nielsen, 1976 was caught at Ploegsteert (Belgium, Prov. of Hainaut). The identification was confirmed by dissection of the genitalia. This is the first record of this species for the Belgian fauna. Details on its biology and distribution are presented.

De Prins W. & Jansen L.: Lampronia rupella, a species new to the Belgian fauna (Lepidoptera: Prodoxidae).
Phegea 40(1b): 35–36.
A small series of Lampronia rupella ([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775) was caught at Malempré (prov. of Luxembourg) on 29 May 1990, leg. W. Hogenes and deposited in the collection of the Zoological Museum, Amsterdam (now at Naturalis, Leiden). On 5 June 2011, a specimen was photographed by the second author at Ovifat (prov. of Liège). This species is mentioned here for the first time from Belgium and information on its distribution in Europe and biology is presented.

Popovic M. & Milenkovic M.: First record of Anthocharis gruneri for Serbia (Lepidoptera: Pieridae).
Phegea 40(1b): 37–38.
The information about the observation of Anthocharis gruneri Herrich-Schäffer, 1851, a new species for the fauna of Serbia, is given and its distribution in the Balkan Peninsula is summarized. Some ecological preferences, the threat status and behaviour of the species are discussed.

Coutsis J. G.: A comparison between the female genitalia of Gegenes pumilio and those of G. nostrodamus (Lepidoptera: Hesperioidea).
Phegea 40(1b): 39–40.
The female genitalia of Gegenes pumilio (Hoffmansegg, 1804) and G. nostrodamus (Fabricius, 1793) are figured and described, providing information for the safe identification of the females of these two closely allied and often misidentified similar species.

Phegea 40 – nummer 2 (1 juni 2012) (Mededelingen)

Troukens W.: Een expansieve uilvlinder in de Benelux: het zwart weeskind, Mormo maura (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae).
Phegea 40(2): 42–43.

Wullaert S.: Triaxomera fulvimitrella (Lepidoptera: Tineidae) rediscovered in Belgium after almost 70 years of absence.
Phegea 40(2): 44–45.
Hitherto only one specimen of Triaxomera fulvimitrella (Sodoffsky, 1830) was known from Belgium. On 05 June 2010, during a moth inventory in the Wijnendaele Forest at Torhout (Belgium, West Flanders), 12 specimens of this species were counted, 8 during the day on tree trunks and 4 during the night on light. The species lives on fungi and dead wood and apparently establishes a strong population in this forest.

Troukens W. : Bladhaantjes aan de westrand van Brussel (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) deel 2: Galerucinae, Alticinae, Hispinae, Cassidinae.
Phegea 40(2): 46–52.
Sinds 1970 werden 64 soorten Chrysomelidae waargenomen aan de westrand van Brussel. De ontdekking van deze soorten worden kort besproken, alsook hun voedselplanten en enkele bijzonderheden.

Coutsis J. G.: Re-examination of the female genitalia of N American Icaricia lupini and I. acmon and description of those of the closely allied I. neurona and I. shasta (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae, Polyommatiti).
Phegea 40(2): 53–55.
The female genitalia of Icaricia lupini and I. acmon are re-figured and re-described, in order to give a more detailed account of their differences than that provided by Scott (1986). The female genitalia of the other two members of the group, i.e. I. neurona and I. shasta, are, to the best of my knowledge, being figured for the first time, and are shown here in order to provide a better understanding of the genitalic interrelationship between all four species of the group.

Matov A. Yu., Ilyina E. V. & Poltavsky A. N.: Records of some rare noctuid moths (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) in Daghestan republic (Russia) in 2009.

Cuvelier S. & Mølgaard M. S.: Butterflies and Skippers in the Dodecanese Islands (Greece): new data and an update on their distribution (Lepidoptera: Hesperioidea & Papilionoidea).
Phegea 40(3): 66–80.
The Dodecanese, the most southerly group of Greek islands in the Aegean Sea, cover a large geographical area and are situated near the mainland of Turkey. The distribution of butterflies on the 12 main islands of the archipelago has been previously studied but considerable gaps in territorial and temporal coverage remain. Many species of butterflies and skippers have a distribution that shows low population densities and various species could easily have been overlooked in the past. In 2011 both authors obtained new data regarding the distribution of different butterfly species and gathered unpublished observations from colleagues. Doubtful and/or data-deficient records are analysed. An updated overview of the Dodecanese butterfly distribution with comparison to the literature is provided.

Phegea 40 – nummer 4 (1 december 2012) (Mededelingen)

Bosmans B.: Recent finds of notable Curculionoidea (Coleoptera) for the province of Limburg.
Phegea 40(4): 82–85.
The fauna of Curculionoidea in the province of Limburg is, like in the other Flemish provinces, still insufficiently known. In this paper, 17 new species for Limburg are discussed, of which 4 species are first records for Flanders, one is a confirmation and three species are rediscovered for the Belgian fauna.

Székely L. & Dinca V.: Leucania punctosa (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), a new species in the Romanian fauna.
40(4): 87–91.
Leucania punctosa (Treitschke, 1825) is recorded for the first time in Romania based on material collected in the steppes of northern Dobrogea (south-eastern Romania), where ca. 300 specimens were attracted to light traps. Adults of both sexes, as well as male and female genitalia, are illustrated. The faunistical importance of the steppe areas from northern Dobrogea is briefly discussed.

Wullaert S.: Stigmella sorbi (Lepidoptera: Nepticulidae), new to the Belgian fauna.
40(4): 92–94.
On 27 May 2011 2 tenanted mines of Stigmella sorbi (Stainton, 1851) were found on Rowan (Sorbus aucuparia) at Bagimont (near Bohan, Namur). On 30 May another 3 tenanted mines were found at Orchimont. It is the first record of this species for the Belgian fauna. During a later excursion at Forges (province of Hainaut), about 10 vacated mines were found. On 23 June 2012, some tenanted mines on Sorbus aucuparia were found at Weywertz and at Rocherath (province of Liège).
