Phegea 40 – 2012

Phegea 40 – nummer 1a (1 maart 2012) (Mededelingen)

van Oorschot H. & Coutsis J. G.: An unusual Polyommatus thersites with basal black spots on FW underside (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae, Polyommatiti).
Phegea 40(1a): 3–4.
A male Polyommatus thersites with basal black spots on its FW underside is reported for the first time, and the merits of differentiating this species from the similar P. icarus solely on the basis of the existence or not of these spots are questioned.

Dils J.: A new species of Thyridanthrax from Morocco (Diptera: Bombyliidae).
Phegea 40(1a): 5–6.
A new Bombyliid species is described from Morocco: Thyridanthrax maroccanus n. sp., based on 17 males and 12 females collected in the Ouarzazate region (S. E. Morocco) in March–April in 2007 and 2009. The new species seems to be related to Thyridanthrax loustaui Andreu, 1961, Murcia (S. Spain).

Anastassiu H. T.: First record of Clossiana selene in Greece (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae).
Phegea 40(1a): 15–16.
A restricted colony of Clossiana selene ([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775) is reported for the first time from Greece. The species appeared to be locally common in mid-July 2011, however its known distribution so far is extremely limited, encompassing only a small marshland area surrounded by coniferous forest in the West Rhodópi mountain range, NE Greece, very close to the Bulgarian border. The small size of its habitat, which is of unusual nature in Greece, in conjunction with the general rarity of this butterfly in SE Europe, call for immediate environmental protection by the authorities.

Franeta F., Kogovšek N. & Verovnik R.: On the presence of Pontia chloridice (Lepidoptera: Pieridae) in the Republic of Macedonia.
Phegea 40(1a): 17–20.
The Small Bath White, Pontia chloridice (Hübner, 1813), is a rare species in the Balkan Peninsula and has been known only by two reliable historical records from the Republic of Macedonia. Its presence was therefore considered a result of rare long distance migrations to the country. In the last three years the species was observed on several occasions in the wide alluviums of the tributaries of the Vardar River in the south-eastern part of the country. The larval host plant Cleome ornithopodioides and larvae of P. chloridice were also discovered indicating that the species is a resident in this region. Although the suitable habitats are limited, there is currently no immediate threat to the species.

The S American Castniid moth Paysandisia archon (Burmeister, 1800), which was accidentally introduced to several S European localities, is now also being recorded for the first time from the Greek island of Páros. This record is the first ever published for Greece as a whole by a lepidopterological journal, all past Greek records having been either in the form of announcements in the local press, or having been included in a doctorate thesis.

Wullaert S.: Triaxomera fulvimitrella (Lepidoptera: Tineidae) rediscovered in Belgium after almost 70 years of absence.
Phegea 40(2): 44–45.
Hitherto only one specimen of Triaxomera fulvimitrella (Sodoffsky, 1830) was known from Belgium. On 05 June 2010, during a moth inventory in the Wijnendaele Forest at Torhout (Belgium, West Flanders), 12 specimens of this species were counted, 8 during the day on tree trunks and 4 during the night on light. The species lives on fungi and dead wood and apparently establishes a strong population in this forest.

Coutsis J. G.: Re-examination of the female genitalia of N American Icaricia lupini and I. acmon and description of those of the closely allied I. neurona and I. shasta (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae, Polyommatiti).
Phegea 40(2): 53–55.
The female genitalia of Icaricia lupini and I. acmon are re-figured and re-described, in order to give a more detailed account of their differences than that provided by Scott (1986). The female genitalia of the other two members of the group, i.e. I. neurona and I. shasta, are, to the best of my knowledge, being figured for the first time, and are shown here in order to provide a better understanding of the genitalic interrelationship between all four species of the group.

Cuvelier S. & Mølgaard M. S.: Butterflies and Skippers in the Dodecanese Islands (Greece): new data and an update on their distribution (Lepidoptera: Hesperioidea & Papilionoidea).
Phegea 40(3): 66–80.
The Dodecanese, the most southerly group of Greek islands in the Aegean Sea, cover a large geographical area and are situated near the mainland of Turkey. The distribution of butterflies on the 12 main islands of the archipelago has been previously studied but considerable gaps in territorial and temporal coverage remain. Many species of butterflies and skippers have a distribution that shows low population densities and various species could easily have been overlooked in the past. In 2011 both authors obtained new data regarding the distribution of different butterfly species and gathered unpublished observations from colleagues. Doubtful and/or data-deficient records are analysed. An updated overview of the Dodecanese butterfly distribution with comparison to the literature is provided.
